BRUUT! at Simplon

The past two weeks have been good to me with some terrific concerts and today was no different. I’ve been a fan of BRUUT! for a while now, but haven’t had the chance to actually see them live. This afternoon their tour of the new album Superjazz brought them to Simplon in Groningen.

Chatham County Line in Vanslag

On Thursday February 9th the men of Chatham County Line came to Borger for an evening of true Bluegrass music. As it happens I’ve seen them before, a long long time ago. It was on the Take Root festival back in 2005. A time when I was just switching from analog photography to digital and I’m happy to see the guys of Chatham County Line have NOT done the same and are still playing true blue ‘analog’.

The Mastersons and Anthony D’Amato in Vera

Last weekend all of Groningen was flooded with bands, reporters and audience from all over Europe for the festival that starts the new concert-year: Eurosonic/Noorderslag. I was not there! I started the 2017 concert-year a week later with The Mastersons and Anthony D’Amato in Vera.

Otis Gibbs and Matt Harlan & Rachel Jones

Visited De Spieghel in Groningen last night. They have some terrific concerts there every now and then and when I say that Otis Gibbs was going to perform there, that seemed a great reason to visit the location again.

An Pierlé in Vera

Looking to add some variation to the concerts I visit I browsed the Vera agenda a little while ago and stumbled on a name that intrigued me. The added video featuring a photo of a girl on a skippybal behind a piano sounded good so I added An Pierlé to my agenda.

Laura Gibson & Jenny Berkel in Vanslag

It’s been a busy few days, working on fences, setting up & testing my new Bianchi bicycle, testing a new lens, getting my X-Pro2 back from the factory… You’d almost forget the concert-season has started again, but it has and so on Friday september nine I was at Borger with the Roots on the Road concert by Laura Gibson and with Jenny Berkel opening.

New Cool Collective in Assen!

Several weeks ago I read that New Cool Collective was coming to Assen, my home town! How cool is that? Very cool! And it’s a good thing, because the name of the festival opening the cultural season of Assen would not have grabbed my attention at all. Preuvenement is about the worst name of an event I’ve heard in a long time. But that didn’t matter: New Cool is here to make us forget that awful name.

The Static Roots Festival pre-fun

A long, long time ago, not far away from here (in the Witte Bal in Assen actually) I was taking photos at a concert by The Long Winters. It was back in 2004 and there I met Dietmar Leibecke and his wife Marion, who came all the way from Germany for that concert. Dietmar and I have kept in contact over the years via the Facebook and so learner about each others musical discoveries and concert-experiences. And now Dietmar has organised a festival of his own: the Static Roots Festival and he was kind enough to invite me.

Spain in Vera

I wasn’t planning on too many concerts this week as I’ll be heading to a festival in Germany this afternoon, but then I saw the announcement of Spain in Vera and I was intrigued. As my girlfriend lives in Barcelona/Spain the name caught my eye and after listening to some songs on Youtube I was sold: I’m going to Spain!

Basia Bulat in the Grand Theatre

I saw Basia Bulat back in 2013 in the Groninger Museum where she completely blew me away with a fantastic concert. We’re a few years on, I missed a concert or two but finally got it all set so I could see her in the Grand Theatre in Groningen last Friday.

Bevrijdingsfestival Assen

On May 5 freedom is celebrated all over the Netherlands and we do this with music! Oh alright: and with messages on the importance of freedom, freedom of speech and the general idea just to be nice to each other. But mostly music. All over the Netherlands there are ‘Liberation festivals’ and national and foreign act can be found on many of these festivals. I visited the one in my hometown: Assen!
