The first edition of Static Roots Festival was held as a wish to organize a festival by organizer Dietmar and turning 50 was a great moment to do just that. It was such a great festival that even before the festival was over the cry to repeat the festival was heard and so this year we got the second edition of Static Roots Festival. This time both days in Zentrum Altenberg.

In the Netherlands concerts are usually held inside, but every once in a while -when the weather is good- you can find those magical open air places with just the perfect music for the location. On the first of June -when the weather was exceptionally well- the good folks of Roots on the Road and Coco Maria held a concert outside. With a setting sun, great music and a beautiful location the scene for a super concert was set!

It’s been over a month since the last concert. A vacation and not many interesting concerts kept me away from the venues. However I saw that Mister and Mississippi was going to play at Vera in Groningen and as it’s been even longer since I last was at Vera, this was a great opportunity to ‘get back in the game’. Since I saw them three times in 2013, they’ve been of my radar, so this was a good time to see what they’ve been up to.

Last week I received a message in Whatsapp “Hey Klass, you coming to Michael McDermott this Friday afternoon?”. Normally I work on Fridays, but this particular Friday I just happened to have the day of os yeah, sure I’ll come and see Michael McDermott.

Ralph de Jongh might very well be the hardes working bluesman of the Netherlands. Releasing two double albums last year, there’s a triple-album out now: Trilogy – ‘Dancing On a Vulcano’. And the touring schedule with solo performances, duo-performances and full band gigs is long. He performed at Vanslag with full band last Saturday to a well filled venue.

Toby Beard is on a European tour at the moment and on March 24th she and her band played in Vanslag. As it was the fifth time for her, it was reason for a little celebration.

The past two weeks have been good to me with some terrific concerts and today was no different. I’ve been a fan of BRUUT! for a while now, but haven’t had the chance to actually see them live. This afternoon their tour of the new album Superjazz brought them to Simplon in Groningen.

In the past few days the Borger church was home to a bluegrass concert and a blues concert. In February 17 I was back in Vanslag again, but this time for The Roseville Band, alternative indie rock from Wales.

On Thursday February 9th the men of Chatham County Line came to Borger for an evening of true Bluegrass music. As it happens I’ve seen them before, a long long time ago. It was on the Take Root festival back in 2005. A time when I was just switching from analog photography to digital and I’m happy to see the guys of Chatham County Line have NOT done the same and are still playing true blue ‘analog’.

With the Mastersons in January I had a careful start of the new concert-season, but February will kick it off for real and to get a good start, the Blues Avenue Revisited started off the month in style: Blues in Vanslag!

Last weekend all of Groningen was flooded with bands, reporters and audience from all over Europe for the festival that starts the new concert-year: Eurosonic/Noorderslag. I was not there! I started the 2017 concert-year a week later with The Mastersons and Anthony D’Amato in Vera.

Visited De Spieghel in Groningen last night. They have some terrific concerts there every now and then and when I say that Otis Gibbs was going to perform there, that seemed a great reason to visit the location again.

Looking to add some variation to the concerts I visit I browsed the Vera agenda a little while ago and stumbled on a name that intrigued me. The added video featuring a photo of a girl on a skippybal behind a piano sounded good so I added An Pierlé to my agenda.

It’s been a long time since I was in Vera, that was back in June. And I’ve seen many concerts since, but it was high time to get back to some no nonsense, straight up rock and White Miles seemed just the thing for that.

Last Friday I was back at Vanslag as Jess Klein’s announcement sounded really interesting. She is traveling with her husband Mike June who’d play as her ‘opening act’. A really interesting way to tour together :)
