Otis Gibbs and Matt Harlan & Rachel Jones

Visited De Spieghel in Groningen last night. They have some terrific concerts there every now and then and when I say that Otis Gibbs was going to perform there, that seemed a great reason to visit the location again.

Meschiya Lake & The Little Big Horns in Vanslag

At first sight Meschiya Lake might seem a bit rough, she certainly has more tattoos than anyone I’ve ever seen. However she’s a super friendly, charming young lady who -together with her band the Little Big Horns- brings a little bit of New Orleans wherever she goes.

Gemma Ray at Jazzcafé De Spieghel

In October 2013 Seasick Steve played at the Oosterpoort venue in Groningen an brought a fantastic opening act with him: Gemma Ray. As I already owned the most important Seasick Steve albums I headed for the Gemma Ray albums after the gig. Loved the album and the concert was terrific too. And now Gemma is back!

A few highlights in concerts that 2014 brought

In 2014 I saw many concerts again. Some by band I knew and it introduced many new artists and bands to me and I loved so many of them. It’s absolutely impossible to arrange a set in a Top 10 as there were so many incredible concerts and one is simply so much different to another. Meschiya Lake Quartet in Jazzcafe De Spieghel

Two years ago at the 15th edition of Take Root Meschiya Lake left a big impression with her striking looks and fantastic mix of old time jazz, ragtime and rhythm&blues. So how fantastic was it that Meschiya was bringing her quartet to Jazzcafe De Spieghel in Groningen?

Welcome to the Village – Sunday

On Sunday the third and last day of Welcome to the Village arrived. And though the festival would end a few hours earlier than on Saturday, the amount of bands I wanted to see was actually bigger. A day to pick up the pace then :)

Eurosonic Wednesday

Since last year, there’s an extra night for Eurosonic: on Wednesdaynight there are a few locations where a small selection of bands are already playing some sets. Makes it easier for the promotors and journalists to see just a bit more, since the other two days of Eurosonic you will miss a lot more than you’re able to see. It’s my only ‘official’ Eurosonic night, so I was looking forward to this night very much.

Pien Feith in De Spieghel

While I was preparing to go and see Gabby Young in De Oosterpoort, I saw a passing tweet by Pien Feith that she’d play in Groningen that same evening at the Jonge Harten Festival. That was too good an opportunity to pass on and so after the gig by Gabby I walked over to Jazzcafe De Spieghel, well in time for Pien’s gig.
