There’s a thing about African music that just makes my heart beat a bit faster and happier. Luckily I’m not the only one and so we are getting more and more funky Afrobeat of African bluesy bands playing in Europe. It doesn’t attract the amounts of crowd like the big western rockbands do, but there’s a good bunch of music lovers that will turn up for these concerts! Last Wednesday Guy One from Ghana played at Vera.
Not so long ago I ran into the album ‘Astonishing Tales From Beyond The Brass Dimension’ by the Broken Brass Ensemble, a brass band (naturally) from the Netherlands. And then I saw they’d come to Simplon for a concert. A very nice coincidence and of course I went there too.
On March 17 we headed to the third concert in a few days time and this time we headed to the Harlem Jazz Club where Ray Cuza & Septeto Sazonando would perform.
Last Friday I went to see Alex Akela and Birgit Wijdemans in a cafe in Steendam, a new location for me, but a really nice café and it was good to meet up with some old friends.
In a few days Eurosonic is going to start again in Groningen and with so many bands -from all over Europe- playing in Groningen, it’s easy to overlook some of them and for that reason alone it’s great that in the day’s before it starts there are some preview shows. In Vanslag in Borger last night they showcased 7 acts from the province of Drenthe that will all play at Eurosonic-Noorderslag next week.
Last Tuesday I visited the Oosterpoort venue for a jazz concert in the café-lounge area. In a program where an New York based jazz-player comes to Groningen, hence the name of the series: New York Comes To Groningen. Tonight that New Yorker is Jack Walrath.
The church-turned-venue Vanslag once started out as well… a church. And last night we witnessed a bit of that ‘old magic’ as Ralph presented us with an evening packed with creativity, blues, rock, poetry… and a wedding!
In the past few weeks I’ve been looking for some interesting concerts to end the year with. I ran into an announcement of a gig in Vera, listened to a soundclip and thought that this could be an interesting option. Turned out Torgeir Waldemar was one of the highlights of the year!
Last Thursday there were no less then two concerts at the Vanslag. Canadian Elliott Brood was back for it’s fourth concert at the venue and Cicada Rhythm from America arrived for it’s first concert at the Borger church.
