My history with Vanessa Peters goes back to May 2007, when I was just photographing for FileUnder for a little while and Vanessa had one of her first visits to the Netherlands. In a very unlikely Café Roezemoes in Groningen Vanessa tried to sing over the loud chatters of the visitors of the café (fun coincidence: Roezemoes is a translation for chatter).
On October six Ralph de Jongh kicked off the new season of Love op Zondag, the series of Jazz and Blues concerts held in Poortershoes in Groningen. After last season’s six concerts the series is back for five more and with Ralph they were of to an amazing start.
In a rush to get everything in order for the vacation, I failed to finish the review on Preuvenement, the cultural season-start of the autumn/winter time in Assen. On two outstandingly bright and sunny days we saw a mixture of music and lots and lots of culinary treats in the Gouverneurstuin in Assen.
This year halfway July was the fourth edition of the fantastic Static Roots Festival in Zentrum Altenberg in Oberhausen. A young festival that is growing and improving every year and as a result of that they SOLD OUT this year, a fantastic achievement and I’m really proud to have been a part of this great festival from the very beginning!
The last concert I saw at Vanslag before it’s summer concert-stop was, halfway May, Fred Eaglesmith who brought his wife Tif Ginn -a seriously good guitarist- along. An evening filled with jokes, stories and a song here or there.
Mid April Laurence Jones returned to Vanslag. I saw him play there before in October 2017. Back then in a tight 4-man formation, this time the group has expanded a bit.
Hearing that Michelle David was coming to Vanslag with the Gospel Sessions was just the best. I mean: The Gospel Sessions in a former church, the ‘Cathedral of music’ of the North, it can’t get much better than that!
Every once in a while it’s nice to visit a concert where you don’t really know what to expect and on March 15 I found myself at Vanslag in Borger for a concert by Marlene Bakker.
Last night I was out to the Asser Bluesdagen with Monica. More of a relaxed evening than a full on photography night. The weather was a lot better then expected so we went to have a look.
Vollek! in the Vanderveen warehouse this afternoon
Last week I visited what was probably the last gig of this year, but also finally the first one in the Netherlands together with Monica. And as we both like jazz, visiting Joris Teepe’s series of jazz concerts was a good concert to start off with.
This year the second album of Maurice van Hoek -Traveling Man- was released and got some rave reviews. And the announcement that he was coming to Vanslag made me a happy man!
The Leif de Leeuw Band is touring honouring the Allman Brothers and brought that to Vanslag last Friday and had a bunch of young dogs as Triple Trouble opening for them.
