Toby Beard is on a European tour at the moment and on March 24th she and her band played in Vanslag. As it was the fifth time for her, it was reason for a little celebration.
The past two weeks have been good to me with some terrific concerts and today was no different. I’ve been a fan of BRUUT! for a while now, but haven’t had the chance to actually see them live. This afternoon their tour of the new album Superjazz brought them to Simplon in Groningen.
Heartbreak hurts, but it can also be the inspiration of terrific songwriting. Luke Winslow-King had to go through some heartbreak when his partner and band-member left him last year. And when you have the blues, when you feel the blues, you play the blues. At least that’s what Luke did and it resulted in a terrific album that’s firmly nestled in blues.
On Thursday February 9th the men of Chatham County Line came to Borger for an evening of true Bluegrass music. As it happens I’ve seen them before, a long long time ago. It was on the Take Root festival back in 2005. A time when I was just switching from analog photography to digital and I’m happy to see the guys of Chatham County Line have NOT done the same and are still playing true blue ‘analog’.
With the Mastersons in January I had a careful start of the new concert-season, but February will kick it off for real and to get a good start, the Blues Avenue Revisited started off the month in style: Blues in Vanslag!
Last weekend all of Groningen was flooded with bands, reporters and audience from all over Europe for the festival that starts the new concert-year: Eurosonic/Noorderslag. I was not there! I started the 2017 concert-year a week later with The Mastersons and Anthony D’Amato in Vera.
I learned about Bauer (not to be confused with the in the Netherlands slightly more known Frans or the American Baauer) in 2006 when they released the album ‘The Bauer Melody of 2006’, an absolutely gorgeous album recorded with the Metropole Orchestra. The fourth album of the band and for a long time… the last. Until this year that is. Ten years after that release and shortly before my vacation to Guatemala I suddenly saw a new Bauer album ‘Eyes Fully Open.
And then it turned out that the band would visit Vera in Groningen. A change I could not pass on, because you never know… maybe I’ll have to wait another ten years for another chance.
Visited De Spieghel in Groningen last night. They have some terrific concerts there every now and then and when I say that Otis Gibbs was going to perform there, that seemed a great reason to visit the location again.
Looking to add some variation to the concerts I visit I browsed the Vera agenda a little while ago and stumbled on a name that intrigued me. The added video featuring a photo of a girl on a skippybal behind a piano sounded good so I added An Pierlé to my agenda.
Last Friday I was back at Vanslag as Jess Klein’s announcement sounded really interesting. She is traveling with her husband Mike June who’d play as her ‘opening act’. A really interesting way to tour together :)
Several weeks ago I read that New Cool Collective was coming to Assen, my home town! How cool is that? Very cool! And it’s a good thing, because the name of the festival opening the cultural season of Assen would not have grabbed my attention at all. Preuvenement is about the worst name of an event I’ve heard in a long time. But that didn’t matter: New Cool is here to make us forget that awful name.
A new festival in Groningen: the Rumbling Earth festival, with musicians playing in various open locations all over Groningen. I was browsing lovely new road bicycles most of the afternoon, so I wasn’t able to see a lot of it and as it started raining at the end of the afternoon I cut my visit to Groningen a bit short, but… but, but, but… I saw three great acts anyway!
Being a lover of Jazz -both the traditional and the more swinging, funky kind- I look forward to the Swingin’ Groningen festival every year. The festival has been put on hold a few times as it’s a free festival and money is tight, but if they’re on and I have a chance I wil absolutely check out some of the band and so it was I was in Groningen last night.
