Autumn has started which means that as festival-season is at an end the concert season is finally starting again. My season started in Eelde of all places, in the museum De Buitenplaats with a concert by House of Cosy Cushions.
This year marks the third year of a fantastic festival in Germany. Starting in 2016 as a one-off to mark the 50th birthday of it’s organizer Dietmar Leibecke, two editions on it feels like it’s always been here. It’s one of the musical highlights of my year, that’s for sure! Getting more attention around the world it’s certainly getting more noticed and I’ve been looking forwards to the festival for the past few months!
This weekend is the 2018 edition of the Swingin’ Groningen festival and every year I try to at least get one night in and this year I visited on Friday evening as that had the best part of the program for me.
There’s a thing about African music that just makes my heart beat a bit faster and happier. Luckily I’m not the only one and so we are getting more and more funky Afrobeat of African bluesy bands playing in Europe. It doesn’t attract the amounts of crowd like the big western rockbands do, but there’s a good bunch of music lovers that will turn up for these concerts! Last Wednesday Guy One from Ghana played at Vera.
Not so long ago I ran into the album ‘Astonishing Tales From Beyond The Brass Dimension’ by the Broken Brass Ensemble, a brass band (naturally) from the Netherlands. And then I saw they’d come to Simplon for a concert. A very nice coincidence and of course I went there too.
On April 6 I visited Vanslag for a sold out The Secret Sisters concert. I’ve seen them before at the Take Roots festival, but that was back in 2011 so I was eager to see them again after such a long time.
I was in Barcelona again for a few days with Monica and we visited several concerts. To start with we headed to the Jazz club JazzMan where we just managed to find a small spot to watch the concert of Gabriel Amargant and Manel Fortià.
No visit to Barcelona is complete without at least one visit to a concert. We checked out a band that was mentioned on the website of the Harlem Jazz Club and tat sounded great so we wen to see Virginia & The Woolfs.
In a few days Eurosonic is going to start again in Groningen and with so many bands -from all over Europe- playing in Groningen, it’s easy to overlook some of them and for that reason alone it’s great that in the day’s before it starts there are some preview shows. In Vanslag in Borger last night they showcased 7 acts from the province of Drenthe that will all play at Eurosonic-Noorderslag next week.
