The last concert I saw at Vanslag before it’s summer concert-stop was, halfway May, Fred Eaglesmith who brought his wife Tif Ginn -a seriously good guitarist- along. An evening filled with jokes, stories and a song here or there.
Fred has a (thin) connection to the Netherlands as one of hit grandfathers moved from the Netherlands to Canada in 1939. From Fred’s songs and stories you wouldn’t say he came from a very religious family as on of nine children.
In between songs Fred likes to talk and share funny stories and jokes. It’s entertaining, but at some point it’s a bit much. On the other hand, I’ve seen him before so I kinda knew what to expect.
The songs however are fantastic and as always ‘Alcohol & Pills’ sounds deep from the heart. Fred is a fantastic lyrical storyteller and has a great voice.
In the amount of instruments on stage it looked as if there was going to be quite the band backing Fred up, but there was only one musician extra, his wife Tif Ginn, who is an amazingly talented multi-instrumentalis, but especially on the electric guitar she was fantastic. It wasn’t for nothing Fred mentioned ‘somebody’s been listening to Jimi Hendrix again’.
So although there was a bit too much talk for my personal taste. it was still a fantastic concert! Many thanks Fred, Tif and of course Vanslag!
