Hearing that Michelle David was coming to Vanslag with the Gospel Sessions was just the best. I mean: The Gospel Sessions in a former church, the ‘Cathedral of music’ of the North, it can’t get much better than that!
I saw the band once before at Swingin’ Groningen. It sounded great there, but it was outside and now it would be inside, the crowd -a massive turn up for this session in church- right up onto the stage and the promise of swinging gospel.
The band has been around for a while. Paul Willemsen and Onno Smit long ago started Beans & Fatback, then came Lefties Soul Connection, where Michelle David got involved too and then they started the Gospel Sessions which is now onto it’s third album.
They don’t do old style Gospel, but have found their own way of music which adds the gorgeous musical style of Paul and Onno -greasy bluesy- to that magnificent voice of Michelle and the result is pure magic.
They played one long set and whoever wasn’t a believer in the beginning was converted in the end. The band gave it their all and then some. I really really hope the band enjoyed the location as much as the audience enjoyed the band and that they’ll return for another session. Miraculous stuff here…
