Every once in a while it’s nice to visit a concert where you don’t really know what to expect and on March 15 I found myself at Vanslag in Borger for a concert by Marlene Bakker.
Of course Marlene wasn’t totally unknown, She and her album RAIF have been in the news quite a bit lately and her style in the Groninger dialect has been mentioned on several blogs, but I hadn’t really heard anything by her yet.
Opening for Marlene would be Hannah Mae, whom I saw not so long ago at the Eurosonic Drenthe preview. That was with band and tonight she was accompanied only by Marlene Bakker’s guitarist Bernard Gepken. In this minimalistic setting the songs still stook up, but the two guitars kept it from turning into a complete singer/songwriter set. Lovely start.
Marlene was joined by Bernard on guitar and Arjen de Bock on keyboards. Marlene’s voice is just fantastic and the concert sounded really good.
Also the venue was -with seats all round- packed. Really nice to see so many people turning up at gigs. It’s not so surprising then that Marlene’s album is up for a a dialect-prize.
The only problem I had was that I don’t speak Gronings nor do I understand much of it. Didn’t take anything from me enjoying the concert immensely however and I had a fantastic evening.
