This year the second album of Maurice van Hoek -Traveling Man- was released and got some rave reviews. And the announcement that he was coming to Vanslag made me a happy man!
Traveling to Borger with Maurice was Demi Knight, a Dutch singer/songwriter influenced by Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. After participating in a Dutch TV-Show ‘The best singer/songwriter of the Netherlands’ she lived in Budapest for several months writing more songs and early this year she released her album ‘Budapest’.
Although Demi has a band, she played solo in Vanslag, with the occasional help from Maurice’s guitar and pedal steel guitar player David Gram. Demi plays a good selection of songs showcasing a really good voice. Really hope she’ll be back sometime for a longer set and with band.
If there’s one thing that radiates from the stage when Maurice van Hoek and band have started, it’s a positive enthusiasm. And also that they’re a really well oiled machine. The band fits together perfectly and the joy on stage is visible.
And with that the quality of the music is fantastic. A wide variety of Americana songs from singer/songwriter to country-rock, a bit of soul, bluesy and pop and with a bit of audience participation. A superb evening with great, great music.
Many thanks to Vanslag, Demi Knight and Maurice van Hoek & band, it was awesome! Let’s do that again sometime. Oh, and next week at Vanslag King King, an awesome blues band and I’m really really really sad I’m going to miss that.
