Autumn has started which means that as festival-season is at an end the concert season is finally starting again. My season started in Eelde of all places, in the museum De Buitenplaats with a concert by House of Cosy Cushions.
Richard Bolhuis of House of Cosy Cushions is a graphical artist as well as a musician and during the last few months he had an exhibition in De Buitenplaats in Eelde. The exhibition was a collection of murals, paintings, soundscapes and video loops under the name of Underground Bliss.
To close that exhibition in style Richard performed with his band House of Cosy Cushions before the exhibition moves to Ireland, where incidentally also half of the band comes from.
Concerts by House of Cosy Cusions are usually made up out of a series of soundscapes however this time they were definitely more in shorter and somewhat in the shape of songs. Some very fragile with only Richard and a drummer, but in full force Richard is aided by Carol Anne McGowan on vocals and electronics, there are drums a singing saw, electronic loops and various other instruments and set in the museum in the midst of Richard’s art the concert in it’s experimental sound and soundscapes just work perfectly.
As the experimental music is in no way your typical style of music, you have to keep an open mind, but if you’re able to do that, the concert is simply amazing. Loved it and happy to have the band opening my new season in concerts!
