Mass hysteria in Borger today as The Beatles played at the local Vanslag church. Well.. The Beatles Revival that is, a Czech band playing the songs by the Beatles in a periodically correct setting.
Personally in general I am not a big fan of coverbands, especially not of those whose original counterparts are still out there. I just don’t see the appeal in watching a band ‘play and dress’ like they’re U2, AC/DC or Queen, playing the songs as accurately as the original bands do. To each their own I guess, but it’s not really my cup of tea. Also I’ll never visit a Pink Floyd cover band; I’ve seen the real deal and no cover band can ever add to or outdo the real experience.
It is a bit different for bands that will never be able to perform in real again. The songs of The Beatles do have a timelessness about them that appeals to the old and new (young) music lovers. And so last night I visited the Czech Beatles cover band The Beatles Revival. I changed my mindset a bit and let myself submerge in the rise of one of the most popular bands ever: The Beatles!
I have a previous experience with a Beatles coverband as I saw the Bootleg Beatles in Groningen back in 2001 and that does say something for the timelessness of the Beatles as there are still people out there that are so strongly interested and inspired by the band that they’re still loving to act out the best moments of the band. I remember the Bootleg Beatles dong the show playing as though there actually were the Beatles.
I’m happy to see that The Beatles Revival had a bit more humour in the show. The first set was aimed to look like and sound like the Beatles in their early rock&roll days. They ended the set with the advice to drink lots and lots of alcohol in the break because ‘the more alcohol you drink, the more we’ll look like the Beatles in the second set’. And with those wise words they ended the set.
For the second set we move into the psychedelic era of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Gorgeous costumes and the lights got a big more groovy too, much like the sound and songs. The audience love it and got more and more in a dancing mood. Terrific show and I’m happy the band sees themselves as a tribute band and didn’t try and act like they were the Beatles.
My plan was to do the first set in black&white and the second set in colour as the flashy costumes begged cor colour. However something went catastrophically wrong with that idea as my camera for some darn unknown reasons got switched to black&white JPeg and I didn’t notice until I got home afterwards.
The Beatles Revival is a terrific band doing a really good job keeping the music of The Beatles alive. And with one last encore and deeply entering LSD-psychadelics we all lived on a yellow submarine, many thanks to the band and Vanslag for a terrific evening!
