Son de la Rambla at Harlem Jazz Club

I’ve been with Monica in Barcelona during the first two weeks of Barcelona and although I’m still working on those photos, I did want to get a bit of a head start with the three fantastic concerts we saw there. The first is of a highly danceable concert by a group of elderly men: Son de la Rambla!

The guys of Son de la Rambla have been playing together for years and years and to some extent resemble their well known Cuban Counterparts of the Buena Vista Social Club and are also somewhat affectionally known as the Barcelona Social Club. We see them at the Harlem Jazz Club where the apparently play about once a month.

The band plays a mix of latin styles that is really swinging. Next to Monica and me is a coupleof whom the woman is a dancing instructor and boy did they dance! In what little room they have they make the utmost possible. Their performance is quite spectacular to behold.

The men of Son de la Rambla play terrific and have loads of fun. The songs are a mix of some the well known traditionals with a bunch of their own songs. After the break they invite some friends on stage for a couple of songs to perform with them. With that and the dancing couple the concert has a really good atmosphere, although the men on stage really have enough charisma of their own for that.

As the final song is played the audience chants for an encore and although the men first jokingly refuse as they’re afraid their retirement home will lock the doors for the night soon, they do give in in the end and play a great encore to end a really, really enjoyable swinging evening.
