It’s been over a month since the last concert. A vacation and not many interesting concerts kept me away from the venues. However I saw that Mister and Mississippi was going to play at Vera in Groningen and as it’s been even longer since I last was at Vera, this was a great opportunity to ‘get back in the game’. Since I saw them three times in 2013, they’ve been of my radar, so this was a good time to see what they’ve been up to.
However the concert would be opened by G.A.U.S.S., a Belgian duo playing ‘atmospheric, ambient pop-music’. At times I was reminded at early LAMB songs. It had a nice rhythm, but I think that if the band gets a bit more confident and chatty between the songs it will give the concert more power. Still a great start.
After a quick rebuild of the podium the stage was filled with smoke and Mister and Mississippi got on stage. As I said I last saw the band in 2013 and since then they released two more albums and both appear to be quite different from their debut. Back in 2013 I fell for the folky approach, the harmonious vocals and the overall feel of the band. And that’s all gone now…
It’s not to say it’s bad, far from it. At times when the bass player got going it felt a bit like they were entering the old ‘New Wave’ genre. But overall it was more dreampop with lots of synthesizer influences and that simply didn’t hit with me. To me at it’s best moment the concert sounded a bit like a weaker version of the now disbanded Daily Bread (last saw them on their final concert at Welcome to the Village, also in 2013).
So not really bad, but also not what I had hoped to see and hear. However very nice to have discovered G.A.U.S.S. though. You can’t always have perfect concerts I guess.
