The past two weeks have been good to me with some terrific concerts and today was no different. I’ve been a fan of BRUUT! for a while now, but haven’t had the chance to actually see them live. This afternoon their tour of the new album Superjazz brought them to Simplon in Groningen.
I found out about BRUUT! when they released their previous album Mad Pack about two years ago. A great collection of interesting tracks that were sometimes small and fragile, but there were a few bold, heavy and comical songs on there too. A great mix. However I just wasn’t able to see them live.
They released Superjazz recently and I was really happy to see that they included Groningen in their touring schedule, playing Simplon this afternoon.
The setlist is a mix that draws mostly from Mad Pack and Superjazz with a few songs from Fire. It’s incredibly danceable, which the audience takes as a cue. The band is smoking, oozing energy. And every time they take it down and you’re starting to feel calmer, they suddenly burst out again.
The term Superjazz is well chosen, the music transcends regular jazz and adds some heavy sounds to the mix. Especially the addition of the Hammond organ adds some swing. Needless to say it was a fantastic concert and I’m happy to have finally seen the band live!
