Last weekend all of Groningen was flooded with bands, reporters and audience from all over Europe for the festival that starts the new concert-year: Eurosonic/Noorderslag. I was not there! I started the 2017 concert-year a week later with The Mastersons and Anthony D’Amato in Vera.
I’ve seen The Mastersons a few years ago opening for Steve Earle (whose concert could have gone better, looking back). However, although Steve’s concerts wasn’t one of the best, I was wondering how The Mastersons would do headlining.
I’m not sure if it’s due to last weeks festival or for other reasons, but there was a lack of audience. Enough to not completely make it uncomfortable, but I would have liked to see a few more people there. And the bands deserved more too!
Anthony D’Amato kicked off with a set on his own. Good clear voice, lovely songs and a good solid singer-songwriter. Enjoyed that a lot.
The Mastersons do have a band, but they’re not here on tour with them. So like last time, they play as a duo. But although last time I felt they could have used a band, this time I really love it. They sound very good together. Eleanor plays a few songs on guitar, but mainly plays violin. It sounds oh so good.
A good and varied setlist that keeps the audience alert. No dozing away, but also too much all the time. Very well balanced with some lighter subjects and a few more darker lyrics.
For the final encore they call Anthony back on stage and that wraps it up for my first concert of 2017. I really, really enjoyed the concert and am happy to have had such a good start for the new concert year.
