Together with Roots on the Road the Vanslag stage in Borger is by now a well known stage for Americana and Roots music, but last Friday I saw that is can more than hold its own in popular music too with the ‘deep house’, loops and full band of Loop Alley.
The core of Loop Alley is Nathan Drohm and Libbie who started making music with loops. Using beats, samples, effects and instruments their music got them known well outside the Netherlands and they’ve been playing (amongst other countries) in Spain for several years and they have a studio in Barcelona too, go figure!
However they felt a need to expand their sound and put together a band, including bass, guitar and drums. This together with Nathan’s wide range of machinery on stages makes for an impressive sight.
The church of Vanslag lends itself very well to the sound of Loop Alley, it felt warm and loud. The inclusion of a live-band for my is a plus as it widens the possibilities of the band (and it’s ‘quicker’ since Nathan and Libbie have to build the layers one by one on their own).
Loop Alley has an EP out that their promoting and there’s a CD in the works for later this year and this was a terrific introduction to the band and I hope to see more of them! (In May on the Dutch Liberation Day Festival (May 5th) they’ll play at the festival in Drenthe).
