On January 2nd the centrumcross races of Surhuisterveen were held including 2 UCI races (ladies and men’s). A good way to finally start what I wanted to do last year: shoot sports!
It was one of the aims of 2013: cover more sports, vary photography a bit more, but all in all I hardly did any sports at all. Not even motorsports! So I was determined to change that this year and what better way then to start with the sport I hold so dear: cycling. Surhuisterveen isn’t that far away and my dad and I were well in time to check out the track and find a good location for photography (my dad’s more active in sports photography and has a good eye for that kind of thing!). Skipping the start/finish line which is in the center of the town (it is a centercross after all), we found the spot where we could see the racers coming from the center, then around the corner trying to cycle on or picking up the bike and run, coming back over a hurdle and then cycling away again. Lots of chances for different compositions then.
First of were the ladies and try as they might, no one was able to come close to Marianne Vos, she was magnificent.
The men’s race started a but more even, but it didn’t take too long for Lars van der Haar to secure his win. Also a powerful demonstration.
We’ve had a lot of luck with the weather. The field where we stood was awful, but that only made the races more interesting to shoot and as it was (mostly) dry and fairly warm, we were good. Had a great time and for a first serious attempt at the races I’m quite happy with the results. Next weekend off to the Dutch championships Cyclocross in Gasselte!
