Last Friday I was back in Borger again, this time for a gig in the Roots on the Road series. They had a great band on with Ha Ha Tonka and opened with a set by New York based Christopher Paul Stelling.
Christopher played solo and took my by surprise. At moments very gentle and subtle guitar playing and moments later raw and loud. The acoustics of the old church helped when Christopher Paul Stelling stepped away from the mic and sang directly to the audience. A great voice and a superb set! And his ‘beat up old guitar’ looks like it has it’s own stories to tell, the carvings, tape and wear&tear roughed up wood looks great. Hope to see him again sometime. From what I saw, Christopher can easily be lured by a package of traditional Dutch ‘Stroopwafels‘. Good to remember that!
All the way from Missouri Ha Ha Tonka rocked through their set. It was pretty darn loud and sounded like it’s supposed to. Also their harmony-singing was absolutely spot on in the church-venue, that sounded just awesome. Alt-country/Indie rock at it’s finest, a great band!
