Gabby Young & Other Animals @ Noorderzon
I saw Gabby a while ago in De Oosterpoort. A lovely gig for a rather small selected crowd, but a very energetic and good humoured girl that easily won over the audience. So I was thrilled to see she’d be back in Groningen and on the main stage of Noorderzon no less. I was very curious to see how that would work.
After having to find myself a spot in the very busy crowd last Sunday with Of Monsters And Men, I made sure I was well on time now and found a great spot. The stage was almost set up, the band was even smaller than with the Oosterpoort World Sessions concert as Gabby Young would be supported by only two of the Other Animals. Although that would not turn out to be fully true…
I felt that it took a few songs to win the audience over. It felt like the crowd was looking for a way in, but once Gabby added the crowd to the backingband having them clap and sing along, the ice was broken and the audience sang along loud and strong (and long long after the songs had ended). So in all the Other Animals was a pretty big band by the end of the evening.
I love Gabby, she’s funny on stage, very enthusiastic and strongly committed to getting the crowd along for the ride. How can you not love that?
The stage at the pond is miraculous. It’s a bit of a strange sight for the bands when they first set foot on it, but when the gig gets going and the boats are in the water (accompanied by swimmers every now and then) something happens… It makes for some impressive concerts and Gabby Young & Other Animals was no different.
