How lucky was I? Just booked my vacation to New York and checking out what music there would be only to find out that the Alabama Shakes would be playing at Summerstage in Central Park. And my hotel was just about located at Central Park. So there was no doubt in my mind I’d go and see them. Even packed my 70-200mm lens just for that occasion. Now if they’ll only let me bring it to the festival…
As it turned out I kind of underestimated the size of Central Park. You could easily loose a small village in there. More than enough room then for a decent festival. When I arrived at the Summerstage festival after a bit of a search (just follow the music dummy!) it was already very crowded and Robert Ellis and band were well into their set. Good mix of country, rock and a dash of folk. Very nice way to get into the mood after a busy morning racing all over lower New York (more on that in later posts). The sun was on full power, it felt extremely hot, the crowd was in a great mood and the festival had started.Hooray :)
After the set of Robert Ellis the stage was quickly reset for the Diamond Rugs, a collaboration between members of Deer Tick (John McCauley), Deer Tick (Robbie Crowell), The Black Lips (Ian Saint Pé), Los Lobos (Steve Berlin), Dead Confederate (Hardy Morris) and Six Finger Satellite (Bryan Dufresne). A really fantastic band that was enjoying themselves on stage plaing a great garage-rock set.
And then finally the Alabama Shakes. Have heard their album a bunch of times already and was extremely happy to be able to see them. Made my choice for this week as vacation only more valid. They sounded awesome, superb gig!
