I’ve been looking forward to this edition of the R&B Night for a long long time. A bunch of fantastic names got out pretty early and the time table showed that the names were spread very nicely so there would be enough time to see just about everything I wanted and it’s a great place to see and catch up with lots of musical friends. The evening started with a few great names so I dived right in.
In de ‘Kleine Zaal’ Eric Bibb started his set of acoustic blues. A joy to listen to as I have a huge soft spot for this kind of blues. Basic, no frills but with a lot of feeling.
In the ‘Foyer’ things were a lot louder with the Hans van Lier Band. Grove based rhythm&blues. Bit of rock, bit of jazz and a whole lot of amped up blues. A very good start of the evening.
In the ‘Binnenzaal’ Eliza Gilkyson was playing. A lot closer to singer/songwriter, but with a folky country-blues sound to it. Demanded a lot more attention as they didn’t roll over you like the Hans van Lier Band did. Nice sound.
In the ‘Entreehal’ Jeff Lang was playing a solo-show that really rocked. Lots of effects at his feet, but way more on a table. Playing with loops, echoes and what not and a mighty fine slide guitar set the Australian really amazed me. Loved this!
