After a short snack and a little bit of a walk I went back to the Grote Markt square for second Eurosonic Air night. A bit sceptic I must add, as I didn’t think I’d like the bands of the Friday edition as much as I did the one from Thursday. Di-Rect, De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig and Go Back To The Zoo are all Dutch and I didn’t think too much about any of them to be honest.
Di-Rect is a popular Dutch rockband. I’d seen them in their earlie days and that wasn’t quite my cup of tea. When the singer left, the band started a ‘talent-show’ on TV to find a new singer. Given my downright hatred towards these shows this didn’t do much for the regards I held for the band and their gig with the new singer at Noorderslag some two years ago kind of clinched it. However, Eurosonic Air is a good stage with lots of light and the closest I’ll get to Eurosonic/Noorderslag this year.
When Di-Rect came on stage -within one song- all that I held against the band was blown away. The sound is fantastic, new singer Marcel Veenendaal has a great voice and the pose on stage is perfect for the band. Newly added guitarist Paul Jan Bakker, with beart, sunglasses and hat is pure old-school rock&roll. Superb gig, really!
Now the next gig, by De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig was to be terrible for sure. Again incredibly popular but I REALLY don’t like rap, so I was safe with my scepticism here, right? Well, not really. The beats by Bas Bron were actually really good. The rapping over that by Vieze Fur, Faberyayo and Willie Wartaal with the whole show and the audience were fun to witness. De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig would be awarded the Popprijs at Noorderslag a day later. But I still won’t buy any albums. That’s one step to far ;-)
The last act of the night I did give a miss. I’ve seen Go Back To The Zoo a few times last year and just don’t get it. So I went home. Get a bit more sleep so I could see a few more bands at Platosonic a day later.
