Eurosonic Wednesday
Since last year, there’s an extra night for Eurosonic: on Wednesdaynight there are a few locations where a small selection of bands are already playing some sets. Makes it easier for the promotors and journalists to see just a bit more, since the other two days of Eurosonic you will miss a lot more than you’re able to see. It’s my only ‘official’ Eurosonic night, so I was looking forward to this night very much.
After having received the festival-pass, we went to the Grand Theatre where Intergalactic Lovers (from Belgium) were already playing. Loved the sound for the few songs we saw and will absolutely go and see them again when they’re around here again
However, on Eurosonic-nights we run from band to band and so we were soon off to see the next band. Onwards to De Spieghel where we saw the last song of Norwegian girlband Razika. Way to short to form an opinion at all, but as they’d play the Platosonic-event a day later, I would probably get to see them again soon enough.
The next stop was close-by: also in De Spieghel, but up the stairs all the way from Estonia came Ewert and the Two Dragons. For a short while it seemed we’d not get to seem them at all as the venue was filled from front to back. Some broadcasting channel must have seen a lot in this band as there were no less then 6 TV camera’s hoovering the band. it was ridiculous. On the other hand the band is fantastic! Fantastic sound.
A short walk later we were queued in front of Vera to see 2:54 (from England) and when we finally got in, we only got to see the last two songs. I hope we’ll get a chance to see them again, seemed like a great band.
There’s also a lot of musical activities around the Eurosonic festival and in Het Pakhuis a “Labelnight” had a bunch of Dutch bands on. One of the Dutch band I wanted to see for a long time is Eins Zwei Orchestra, so as they were playing in Het Pakhuis, it was a no brainer to go there. Would have like to see a bit more light in the venue. Concert photography should be a bit of a challenge, but this was just too much. But the concert was absolutely fantastic. Hope to see them with a bit more light next time.
Back to the Grand Theatre now where a sublime Lisa Hannigan (from Ireland) and band was playing. Her voice a bit hoarse sounds so good, the band was on a roll. Together with Ewert and the Two Dragons this is definitely the highlight of this evening. She mentioned they’d be back for a tour and I really do hope they’ll come to Groningen again.
To finish the evening we went back to Het Pakhuis for a really fun gig by Andre Manuel‘s Dancing Dollekamp. A great band with two drummers, and besides Andre himself on guitar there were an extra guitarist and a bass-player. It’s a miracle that it all fitted in that small area. Fantastic musicians having a bit of fun. Great way to end the first day of a few days chock-full of music.
