Gabby Young in De Oosterpoort

Gabby Young -the British answer to Lady Gaga- is coming to De Oosterpoort with her band Other Animals

That caught your attention, didn’t it? It certainly grabbed mine. I read an announcement that headlined this statement and if the British answer to Lady Gaga is coming to perform in Groningen, then I have to see that. Just so I can once say: I saw her… in Groningen nonetheless.

As it turns out Gabby Young is nothing like Lady Gaga. Urban legends like that of Gaga’s gender are out of the question: Gabby is very girlish, she has 10x as much stage presence and has a very musical and entertaining stage-show to boot. Hmmm, actually that might be an answer to Lady Gaga after all. A good one too!

The gig is part of a series of concerts “In the World Sessions” series, so it’s not based on normal popmusic, but music from different parts of the world. The show is opened with a short film on Gabby and after that, the concert starts. London based Gabby Young adamant in NOT focussing on one particular genre and plays a mix of pop, rock, folk, gipsy and Balkan music and makes quite an impression on stage. The band is very entertaining to watch and spend a lot of time in and around the crowd, making use of balconies and empty seats.

And that’s actually the only problem I had with the concert: seats. Gabby Young’s music is not meant to be sitting down to and that actually made it much harder for the band to get the audience to get into the groove. But they managed very well in all. It was a great concert and a fantastic introduction to Gabby Young. But next time make the audience stand up, OK?
