A few months ago I read the announcement that Elvis Costello was going to come to Groningen! That was something to look forward to. The man’s musical career is as long as I am old and he still releases great albums. The gig in De Oosterpoort (on November 8th) would be a solo-performance, to be opened by Larkin Poe
And Larkin Poe was amazing. Great vocals, a great band and I loved the Lovell sisters on guitar/mandolin. A very charming duo and a fantastic opening of the gig (closing with a Jimi Hendrix cover was daring but worked out superb).
Elvis came on stage to a backdrop of a selection of guitars, a seat on the side and a piano/Wurlitzer setup at the back on the stage. We were jokingly (but not too jokingly) anticipating a guest appearance by Elvis’ wife Diana Krall. That didn’t happen though. The piano was left untouched for a long time though. The first part of the gig was only Elvis on vocal and guitar having the audience (a sold out venue) hypnotised and silent. After a while Elvis brought Larkin Poe to the stage for a few songs. And though Elvis didn’t seem like stopping just yet, I had to leave a little after eleven, but not before I heard an incredible version of ‘I Want You’, the song that first introduced me to Elvis Costello. That! That was an awesome conclusion for an incredible concert. The concert went on (bringing Larkin Poe back to the stage) and I went home to work on the photos. A fantastic gig both by Elvis Costello as by Larkin Poe!
