Richmond Fontaine in Vera

Went to Vera last Thursday to see Richmond Fontaine, a ‘country rock’ band that, according to the info on the Vera website, sounds like Uncle Tupelo, 16 Horsepower and Willard Grand Conspiracy. So it ought to be right up my alley.

Opening for Richmond Fontaine was Stiv Cantarelli. I quite liked this. A folky sound, but the guitar-sound was a bit odd. Very interesting set, but a huge shame that there was hardly an audience to speak of. I guess most of the gig-going student of Groningen preferred the Within Temptation theatre concert in De Oosterpoort to the folk-gig in Vera. Huge shame though.

After a short break Richmond Fontainestarted the gig. First they played the whole new album and after that a bunch of extra songs. I’m afraid the gig didn’t really take with me. When they picked up the pace it sounded really good, but the slow pieces and the spoken word stuff just did not work for me at all. Perhaps at TakeRoot it would have worked better, but her in Vera for me it just didn’t. Luckily the audience had grown a bit once Richmond Fontaine had started, but for me this was not the gig I wished it to be.
