Back in the day when men were real men and motorbikes were… killing machines on two wheels motor-racers were a special breed of men. With far less regulations for the races, the motorbikes really were far more dangerous and louder than modern day bikes. And they were prettier to look at. So it’s a good thing that Eext held a streetrace with these old machines, driven by old (but young at heart) racers.
The MotorGP Eext event lasted most of last week with parades, training, music and the bikes on display in the ‘pits’. I went on Sunday when the last races and parades were held. Racing day! With practice in the morning and races in the afternoon I arrived a little after one to find the first races already under way. It sounded awesome. There were several classes and they all got a few races. It was all in good fun, but that didn’t mean they didn’t race. It’s a circuit after all and the racers may not be the youngest around, they do know how to get some speed out of the machines!
I divided the photos in four sets. First up are the sidecar racers. Gorgeous machines with racer and passenger. Some or the bikes had hardly any bodywork on them, but the faces of the racers showed how much fun it still is. Great bikes.
Then on the the Motor GP Parade; a beautiful selection of bikes, some brands still current others unfortunately have not made it. Amongst the riders was the legendary Dutch rider Wil Hartog, better known as De Witte reus (The White Giant) A very tall rider in his day, riding in white overalls. There were some very good looking old bikes amongst this batch.
The next selection is a collection of a few sets of races with bikes ranging from very old to slightly younger. Again lots of beautiful bikes and an amazing sound from these racing machines.
To end the day they had a special treat waiting for the audience: the Yamaha Classic Racingteam including Steve Baker and the one and only Giacomo Agostini. The best of the best in racers and they didn’t take it easy in Eext, pulling wheelies over start/finish, laying low in the corners and all in all having a damn good time.
It was an absolutely fantastic day. A trip down memory lane for some, a meeting with heroes for others and seeing daddy getting all emotional for the young kids :-) And bar a few drops of rain it was actually a very nice day. Only started pouring down when I was already on my way back home.
