Boef en GA, Joy Formidable, Nobody beats The Drum, Tim Knol and Triggerfinger @ Dauwpop 3/4

When your working a festival, you inevitably end up doing a few things you’d never ever do out of your own free will. Entering the Jägermeister Dance Arena for instance. Not something I’m very proud of, but sacrifices must be made to deliver the goods to the boss.

The Dance Arena is exactly that: low stage where DJ’s and rap/Hip-Hop acts do their thing. I quicly took a few shots of the popular Dutch radio personality Giel Beelen who was mixing some stuff before the Dutch Hip-Hop act Boef & De Gelogeerde Aap performed. I guess it’s all in good fun, but it so is not my kind of music. Didn’t stay too long.

Once I got the shots, I was done to shoot Racoon at the main stage. Didn’t get much of anything interesting there and as I’m just not into the band, I ran to the Surprise Stage. Because here the Wales based Indie Rockers The Joy Formidable were about to start. They had already made quite an impression on most of the people I know that saw them at Eurosonic earlier this year and as I missed that particular gig, I really wanted to see them here. And am I ever happy I did! Loud, heavy guitars, catchy songs a cute (but with ‘rockbitch’ look) singer and a joy to see the band perform. Want to see more the them! A lot more.

I actually had a few minutes to catch my breath and to prepare for a very busy slot. First of back to the Dance Arena to shoot the Dutch DJ trio Nobody Beats The Drum. They started about fifteen minutes late and got my pretty worried as the next act I had to shoot was now starting at the same time, leaving me with only very little time to shoot either. So unfortunately without taking much notice of the band I shot my photos of Nobody Beats the Drum and was of running again.

I made it in time, missing only very little of the start of new rising Dutch star Tim Knol. With a hugely successful debut album and a brand new second album, backed by a band consisting of musicians I regularly see in the indie/alternative pop-rock gigs (so lots of very good musicians!) this gig was a safe bet and mainly stayed the singer-songwriter genre with lots of great songs. It’s one of those acts that I really hate having missed before and even more only being able to see only such a small portion of it now. Good gig and I’ll go see a full concert, once he’s around here again.

But for now I really must be getting back to the Main Stage to see Belgian Stoner-rock heroes Triggerfinger. God, I missed them. An incredible band, the sheer force of the trio, immaculately well dressed, very polite to their audience, but once playing a wall of sound knocks you 20 feet back. I’ve seen them quite a few times now and as always a tight and awesome show!
