Josh Ritter and Tift Merritt in the Stadsschouwburg
I learned about Tift Merritt via Last.fm, thanks to Marybeth Damico (thanks Marybeth ). It’s one of those great benefits from these kind of sites: learning about other artists via friends. And as luck had it Tift Merritt is touring with Josh Ritter and they just happened to come to Groningen. Life can be that easy.
Photography however was far from easy. Josh and Tift played at the Stadsschouwburg and Tift played on her own armed with only an acoustic guitar. Sounded fantastic, but after two or three shots with my trusty Canon camera, the first few ‘if looks could kill’ glances were already sent my way. And when Tift went fully acoustic I didn’t dare shoot any photos at all. With the added difficulty of getting the camera settings like I wanted and Tift Merritt generally looking in the wrong direction (or it was me in the wrong place) it’s not the best set ever. But there are a few nice photos anyway and I did enjoy seeing Tift play a lot.
Not much later Josh Ritter came on stage and played the first song solo. For a moment I feared that I’d have the same problems with Josh as I had with Tift, but after the first song the band came on stage and my Canon-shots were muffled by a loud band-sound. The set was terrific. Lots of variation in solo and band work and a fully unplugged song (even the electric lights were shut down). Also it’s hard not to be swept along in Josh’s enthusiasm. The only downside was that is was a sit-in concert. I think it would have swung a bit more if the audience would have been allowed to. On the other hand; the Stadsschouwburg is a really beautiful venue, that makes up for a lot. Nice evening out again!
